Mammography is a specialized imaging technique that employs a low-dose X-ray system and high-contrast, high-resolution film to examine human breasts. Its primary purpose is to detect various types of tumors and cysts. Extensive research has demonstrated the effectiveness of mammography in reducing mortality from breast cancer. Early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment, and mammography plays a central role in the early detection of breast cancers. In fact, mammograms can reveal breast changes up to two years before they can be felt by a patient or physician.

Furthermore, mammograms are valuable in assessing breast cancer after the discovery of a lump or other indications of the disease. Such mammograms are known as diagnostic mammograms. In addition to lumps, signs of breast cancer can include breast pain, thickening of the skin, nipple discharge, or changes in breast size or shape. However, it's important to note that these signs can also be indicative of benign conditions. Diagnostic mammograms are useful for evaluating changes detected during a screening mammogram or for examining breast tissue when obtaining a screening mammogram is challenging due to special circumstances, such as the presence of breast implants.
